AMS
The Aeromedical Section - AMS is the competent authority for aeromedical matters according to Regulation (EU) No. 1178/2011, Regulation (EU) 2015/340 in conjunction with the relevant provisions of the Bulgarian National Legislation. This task is performed by the Aeromedical Section as part of the Flight Operation and Licencing Department of Bulgarian Civil Aviation Administration (BG CAA).
AMS is responsible for:
- Certification and oversight of Aeromedical Examiners (AMEs), Aeromedical Centers (AeMCs) and Occupational Health Medical Practitioner - OHMP.
- The implementation and oversight of the medical requirements for pilots, air traffic controllers, cabin crews.
- The change upon request of competent authority (SOLI) and reviews the medical files compliance.
- Review and assessment of borderline cases of medical fitness, consultation with AMEs.
- Assessment of medical fitness after referral.
- Recognition of Medical Certificates issued in another EU Member State
- Suspension and revocation of medical certificates and AME, AeMC Certificates.
- Approvement of AME's training programs and performing refresh training for AMEs.
INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS
There is no age limit for a medical certificate. It is recommended that the medical exam is performed before starting the training.
- 16 years for a Ballon Pilot Licence (BPL); Sailplane Pilot License (SPL)
- 17 years for a licence LAPL
- 17 years for a private pilot licence (PPL)
- 18 years for a CPL licence
- 21 years for ATPL
- 21 years for ATCO (Air Traffic Controller)

A licence holder shall not at any time hold more than one medical certificate issued in accordance with this Part
MED.A.040 EU Reg. 1178/2011
(a) A medical certificate shall only be issued, revalidated or renewed once the required medical examinations and/or assessments have been completed and a fit assessment is made.
(b) Initial issue:
(1) Class 1 medical certificates shall be issued by an AeMC.
(2) Class 2 medical certificates shall be issued by an AeMC or an AME.
(3) LAPL medical certificates shall be issued by an AeMC, an AME or, if permitted under the national law of the Member State where the licence is issued, by a GMP.
(c) Revalidation and renewal:
(1) Class 1 and Class 2 medical certificates shall be revalidated or renewed by an AeMC or an AME.
(2) LAPL medical certificates shall be revalidated or renewed by an AeMC, an AME or, if permitted under the national law of the Member State where the licence is issued, by a GMP

Pregnancy always leads to a temporarily unfitness. Under special conditions flying during pregnancy can be authorized.
MED.B.045.b.(2) – EU Reg. 1178/2011
Holders of Class 1 medical certificates shall only exercise the privileges of their licences until the 26th week of gestation with an OML. Notwithstanding MED. B.001 in this case, the OML may be imposed and removed by the AeMC or AME.
